Cillian Murphy is an Irish theatre and film actor. He rose to prominence with his sublime performances in both independent and mainstream films in the late 1990s.

Since 2013, Murphy has portrayed Thomas Shelby, the lead of the BBC gangster series Peaky Blinders, for which he has won two Irish Film and Television Awards for Best Actor – Drama, in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Before he became an actor, Murphy sang and played guitar in a band, Sons of Mr Greengenes, with his brother. The duo was actually a five-album deal by a record label in London, but they turned it down. Murphy’s younger brother was still in school, and their parents were unsure if they wanted their sons to get involved in the music industry.

Cillian Murphy is a true method actor as it was revealed he smoked a staggering 3,000 herbal cigarettes in just one series of Peaky Blinders.

His favorite way to relax is to read a book. For him, no holiday is complete without nice music, a glass of wine and a good book. Among his favorite writers are: Ernest Hemingway, J.P. Donleavy, Patrick McCabe, John Banville, Richard Ford, Geoff Dyer, Max Porter, John Healy, John O’Hara.

Cillian used to be a vegetarian for 12 years. When he started eating meat again, it was venison. Although he was a vegetarian, he learned to chop up meat in an abattoir for his role as butcher in Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003).

While Murphy is from Ireland, he lived in London for years with his wife and kids. In 2016, he and his family moved back to Ireland, to a town near Dublin.
