Nayland Blake is an internationally acclaimed American interdisciplinary artist, educator and curator, whose work focuses on the interracial attraction, same-sex love and intolerance toward them.

There’s one important fact that we cannot leave without due regard.

For the last few years, Nayland Blake has opted to use “they/them/their” pronouns instead of the masculine “he/him/his” as a form of address. The decision was made partly in solidarity with those, whose gender expression does not fit a binary, as a nod toward a possible future of universal pronouns, that aren’t loaded with social expectations. However, it also came from Blake‘s lifelong understanding of his own identity as a hybrid.

Returning to Blake’s art, they work in such areas as sculpture, drawing, painting, performance and video. They have drawn from their experiences and their unique identity as a means of exploring the constructions of race, sexual orientation, class and self-identity.

Secondly, you should visit their exhibition, No Wrong Holes, at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA). This show marks the most comprehensive survey of Nayland Blake’s work to date and their first solo institutional presentation in LA.

In this exhibition, particular focus is paid to work produced while they lived on the West Coast, first in the greater Los Angeles area as a graduate student at CalArts, followed by a decade in San Francisco. These years, the 1980s- 1990s, were characterized by the advancement of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the “culture wars.”

The show is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue designed by Content/Object, Los Angeles, which includes newly commissioned essays, key reprints, archival material, and content produced by the artist and others.
